CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Lily refused to be troubled by the prospect of leaving Tain just before Christmas. She would have to leave sometime and she told herself it might as well be then. In the meantime, there was plenty to occupy her.

Shore went off to Skipton and returned with a sturdy little pony and, by the end of the week, a tutor had also been found for Toby. The subject of schooling had arisen at dinner one night when Leo suggested the boy should go to school, as he had done.

‘But when I said he was too young you agreed with me,’ Lily objected.

At least the frostiness between her and Leo had abated somewhat and they could discuss such matters far more easily.

‘I did, but then you were talking about an establishment of which I had no knowledge. As my son, Toby will go to Selkerton, my old school.’

‘No, no, I will not hear of it,’ declared his mother.

‘Why not, Mama? I came to no harm.’

‘You did not, but your brothers were not so fortunate.’ The Duchess was uncharacteristically firm. ‘I believe their years at Selkerton fixed in them the selfish and cruel traits that I so deplore. Your father and I were rarely at Tain, which made school a necessity, if you were not to grow up in the company of servants. You plan to make this your home, which means you will be on hand to mould your son’s character. I would far rather Toby followed your example, than have him grow up to be like your brothers. Or your father.’

Lily wanted so much to agree with the Duchess but was afraid it would be seen as interfering. She waited anxiously for Leo to speak.

‘If you really think it best, Mama.’

‘I do think it.’

‘And you, Miss Wrayford, you believe a tutor would be best?’

‘A good tutor, sir, yes,’ she said, surprised and gratified to be consulted. ‘Especially if you and the Duchess are here to make sure he is the right man.’

‘Very well, I can see I am outnumbered. We shall find a suitable candidate and you, Miss Wrayford, shall interview him with me!’
